Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), also known as Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), is a goal-oriented and pragmatic approach to therapy that focuses on solutions rather than problems.
Solution-Focused Therapy is particularly useful for clients seeking quick, practical solutions to specific issues and for those who do not wish to engage in long-term therapy. It can be applied to a wide range of concerns, including relationship issues, substance abuse, depression, and more. Its emphasis on positive change and future possibilities makes it a valuable approach in counseling and psychotherapy.
It was developed by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg in the 1980s in Milwaukee, USA.
Its foundations are based on several key principles and techniques:
- Focus on Solutions – SFT emphasizes finding solutions to current problems rather than dwelling on past issues or analyzing their causes. It encourages clients to imagine a future where their problems are resolved.
- Client-Centered Approach – SFT is client-centered, meaning the client is seen as the expert in their own life, possessing the knowledge and resources to overcome their challenges. The therapist’s role is to help clients access and utilize their own expertise.
- Brief in Nature – SFT is typically short-term, consisting of a limited number of sessions. The aim is to bring about change as quickly as possible, often within just a few sessions.
- Compliments and Validation – SFT therapists use compliments and validation to acknowledge clients’ efforts and strengths, fostering a positive and collaborative therapeutic relationship.
- Small Steps and Goals – SFT encourages clients to set small, achievable goals that move them toward their desired future. These incremental steps help build confidence and momentum for change.
- Cultural Sensitivity – SFT can be adapted to be culturally sensitive, respecting the client’s cultural background and worldview.
- Strengths-Based Approach – SFT focuses on the client’s strengths and resources, highlighting what is already working in their life.
